I think the transcribing as a matter of course was because of AFRS. Lots of shows were lost because if they were recorded at all, it was proof for advertisers that their spot(s) did run in the show, and are now held in private hands, at best.

My father grew up near where they mined "Blue Coal". He said they just sprayed anthracite coal, blue.

From a business stand point, it managed to brand a commodity. How much more they were able to charge, I have no idea. Maybe it just increased sales.
