Looking to buy a Mossburg 590

Posted on 10/07/2016 1:15:41 PM PDT by Da_Shrimp

I'm in the UK and sadly we're limited in what we can buy gun-wise, but I already shoot clays and have a gun licence. I recently saw a Mossberg 590 for sale and I really like it. Any opinions on this gun? Worth getting?

Unfortunately, the RKBA ping may not apply to our British friend here.

Oh, the RKBA is about much more than that.

It's a fun thread to talk about what we have, what you need to get and who has more guns than everyone else :-)

I have one and it's my favorite home defense weapon.

I'm surprised you can buy one in the UK.

8+1 12 guage...3in mag of 00 buckshot is a devastating weapon.

OUCH! 594 pounds!

I bought mine for $279 and it has the 20 inch barrel.

Argh - not the price. But the home defence concept!

Good all around utilitarian shotgun. I’ve used mine for clays, although most serious clay shooters use semi-autos or over/unders. But I’m not that serious about it, I just shoot for fun and to become more proficient with what I own.

Don’t know if you can locate one but I’d suggest a Browning Auto-5. Find one made in Belgium.
It is often referred to as “the humpback.” One look and you’ll understand.

Good luck.

What length barrel are you getting?

The M590 is one of very few shotguns accepted and adopted by the US Army, so that tells you something.

Back in the 80’s this was the USMC issue shotgun. I shot them a lot, because I trained with the USMC we probably put a couple of hundred rounds of buck through them a day AND all the classes that came through those courses did the same. I never saw a 590 fail during all of those days and weeks we trained on them.

I am a psychotic gun snob, particularly when it comes to shotguns. That said, if I had to have one pump gun to deal with life’s circumstances it would be one of the Mossberg 500 series.

I bought Mother Slim one for home defense many moons ago.

Good point, I’ve replaced one of the plastic ones. It can be a bit of a pain if you aren’t willing to pull the trigger group.

Owning an A5 in the UK can be problematic, one fellow on the Browning forum at Shotgun World said the magazine tube needs to be crimped to only allow 3 shots, which given the long recoil system might be a reliability killer.

I have pistol grips, with a 590A1 safety, and it's never bothered me in the least.

BTW, the only true "safety" for a Mossberg is in keeping any & all rounds out of the firing chamber. Once you pull [or push] a load into the chamber, the Mossberg is a friggin cannon, waiting to destroy whatever it's pointed at, safety or not.

And if there's anything you care about, within a country mile of you and your Mossberg, then don't pull [or push] a round into the firing chamber in the first place.

PS: You get a Mossberg 590A1 [instead of a Remington or a Beretta or any of those other pretender guns] when you absolutely positively don't want to be bothered with worrying even an ounce about whether or not your gun's action can take the load of the hot rounds which you're about to fire from it.

So bring on the Hornady 00 buck & the Federal F131RS rifled slugs at 1600fps, and shoot them all day long.

Your shoulder will give out long before your Mossberg 590A1 ever calls it quits.

Mossbergs are a great value for the money. We have to 500 models.

That’s a pity.
The Browning is a classic.

If you’re in the UK, then presumably you’ll have to take what you can find.

Buy it; it’ll serve you well enough in case of need.
