BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say a motorist who was apparently agitated over an evacuation route was wounded after exchanging gunfire with deputies in Moncks Corner Wednesday afternoon.
Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said the gunfight happened at an employees' parking lot at the Dupont plant on Cypress Gardens Road.
Lewis said during a Wednesday evening press conference that the subject was treated on the scene and was transported to Trident Hospital. The subject's condition has not been released by authorities.
The incident started at 5:30 p.m. when the sheriff's office received a call from the Moncks Corner Police Department whose officers were manning a traffic evacuation detour at Highway 52 and Gilliard Road just outside of Moncks Corner.
"An individual at that detour negotiated, knocked some cones down and made some remarks to the officers at the scene," Lewis said.
Lewis said he didn't know at the time what the subject told the officers, but did say there was some indication by the subject that the officers were in danger.
"His actions placed the officers in danger," Lewis said. "The Moncks Corner police called the sheriff's office for assistance and we responded and picked up the chase on Old Highway 52."
The sheriff's office said that at some point the deputies had the subject stopped, but the driver "drove in a reckless manner toward the officers."
Lewis said deputies continued the chase which ended at the Dupont employees parking lot on Cypress Gardens Road where the subject got out of his vehicle, pointed a firearm at the deputies and started shooting at them.
"At that point, the deputies returned fire striking the individual and he has been transported to Trident Hospital at this time," Lewis said.
No officers or deputies were injured in the incident according to BCSO officials.
Lewis said SLED has been called to the scene to investigate the shooting.
Deputies still had an area taped off as authorities worked the scene.
"We have this area cordoned off as you can tell and we'll be cooperating fully with SLED and providing them with the information they need to complete this investigation," Lewis said.
Lewis said four deputies were involved in the initial gunfight and they have been placed on administrative leave and were are at the sheriff's office to provide additional information on what occurred.
"I don't know how many of the [deputies] exchanged gunfire, but those four deputies are being placed on administrative leave," Lewis said.

“made some remarks to the officers at the scene,”
I bet that was some colorful language. lol
That seems kind of bizarre, given the gravity of the situation (hurricane Matthew). Obviously more to this story that we may - or may not - find out eventually.
The Hurricane hasn't even hit Florida and days away from South Carolina

I know just where it is...
My youngest was born there...
Across the street is my alma mater...
The mentally ill don’t stop being mentally ill just because a hurricane is coming. If anything, you should see more of this because of the impaired coping mechanisms of the mentally ill.

I know. And that traitorous witch is trying to warn everybody with a phony Southern accent. Reminds me of Hillary trying to ‘appeal’ to blacks by talking like a black woman. Insulting and patronizing as well.
Haley turned out to be a RINO jerk.
We've been coddling the "mentally ill" ever since the 1960s, when the "mentally ill" figured out they could force people to accept their view of the world by getting on television, and the MSM figured out they could make lots of money by celebrating the "mentally ill."
Now we live in the age of "doubling down."
When you "double down" on the police, they "double down" back, and you end up with bullets flying through your body, or on death row.
The last hurricane that hit Texas, people were not allowed to leave the evacuation route. Cars would sit in the same spot for hours and many ran out of gas. It was a catastrophe.
It’s possible the cops cordoned off the road in some stupid manner, perhaps inadvertently. I’ve seen that before myself.
E.g.:
1) Accident on 4 lane road. Only needed to block off left most 2 lanes, but emergency vehicle parked w/its bumper half way into a third lane unnecessarily. Made traffic squeeze into one lane instead of two, which would’ve made a big difference.
2) Was being directed out of building during fire drill. From my position, two ways out, however the security personnel apparently had an imaginary line in mind whereby those coming from one side go out door 1 and the other side out door 2. I was coming from the door 2 side but wanted door 1, which was actually closer. Guard screaming at me but I just kept walking.
I once saw a fistfight at a gas station when there was a temporary gas shortage.
After that catastrophic evacuation of the Houston/Galveston area during Hurricane Ike, most people said they will never evacuate again. Many more people died in the evacuation than in the hurricane, including a busload of nursing home residents on the road to Dallas from Houston on a Mexican owned bus that caught fire. What a disaster.
My first thought was he wanted to avoid the congestion and find his own way out.
Well, it sounds like he figured out how to avoid the evacuation.
Or he wanted to contraflow when the cops wanted everyone outbound.
We were sent home early due to the lane changes yesterday.
Coming in is optional and I am staying in. I have to deal with I26 and 77.
A co-worker made it in from somewhere else and said traffic was ok. It will be later today when and if there is a mess.
I understand that there are a handful of people around. Most are remote and causing trouble just the same.
I can use the break from the commute for a day or two.
A friend of mine in the downtown Charleston area sent his wife out and he is staying behind.
Mostly, I figure it will be a lot of rain and wind gusts here up around Columbia. I work a couple counties down. A lot of people there are local to the area or live further south.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
