Tax fossil fuels or risk kids' future: US climate scientist

Miami (AFP) - Levels of the planet's three most dangerous greenhouse gases are rising, and fossil fuels must be taxed to protect children from the turmoil of rising seas and extreme storms, climate scientist James Hansen warned Tuesday.

Otherwise, young people face the "dubious" proposition of somehow sucking carbon dioxide from the air at a price tag of hundreds of trillions of dollars in the next century, said Hansen, who leads the climate science program at Columbia University's Earth Institute.

"The science has become crystal clear," Hansen told reporters on a conference call to discuss his latest research paper, entitled "Young People's Burden: The Requirement of Negative CO2 Emissions."

"We have to phase out carbon emissions over the next few decades," said Hansen, describing the actions of the US government up until now as "grossly inadequate."

We are going to be dependent on carbon-based fuels burned with atmospheric oxygen as our primary source of energy production, for electricity, for motor vehicles, and for home heating purposes well into the 22nd or 23rd Centuries. Carbon dioxide CANNOT possibly be as important to any “climate change” as these pseudo-scientists seem willing to assign to the substance.

There is a very important “greenhouse gas” that has from 30 to a hundred times the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and that is water vapor. Water vapor is the great regulator of climate all over the world, and it has several attributes that carbon dioxide cannot hope to duplicate under normal atmospheric conditions.

Carbon dioxide may only exist under terrestrial conditions as a gas. Water vapor is not only a gas, when it is sufficiently cooled, it is also a liquid with its own particular characteristics, and when cooled even further, it becomes a solid mineral we know as ice.

When moving from one state to another, the compound dihydrogen oxide either absorbs an ENORMOUS amount of heat, or gives it up. Some 75% of the surface of this planet is covered with water of varying depth, from 0.5% to 1.0 % of all the earth’s surface is covered with an ice cap averaging one mile in depth, and from 0.25% to 4.0% of the composition of the atmosphere is water vapor. Water in all its states of matter is the most important factor in climate conditions in ALL instances. Carbon dioxide is not in second or even tenth place.

Now if you can control water vapor and its changes from one state to another, that would make a significant difference.

But you might as well try to alter the progression of heavenly bodies in their orbits. Nothing mere humans can do will ever make such a significant difference.

BUT we were told it is too late now. All is lost.

Will the idiot they put in charge of the climate scam today please try to make up their minds.

I am far more concerned with the Mercury China in dumping into the water supply.

That would only influence people who care about facts. Remember the college activists who went around getting signatures from their fellow students on a petition to ban Di-hydrogen monoxide? Or all the products that are supposed to be safe because “they have no chemicals”?

Fossil fuels are already taxed more heavily than anything besides liquor and cigarettes. Which is a coincidence since anytime I hear the phrase “climate scientist” I crave a drink and a smoke. When it’s Hansen it’s best to keep weapons out of reach as well. That MF has been living off the public dime, my dime, for decades while helping perpetuate the greatest fraud in history.

These "scientists" are saying that 0.04 of one percent of our atmosphere (CO2) IS a pollutant.

It's insane madness!

I think that the words "discredited" or "disgraced" are missing in front of "climate" scientist, James Hansen.

James Hansen has no valid scientific evidence to support his assertions that levels of the planet's three most dangerous greenhouse gases are rising, and fossil fuels must be taxed.

This kind of predictable rhetoric by the warmers is consistent with the fact that hurricane Matthew is on the way after 11 years of nothing.

Does Hansen know the difference between weather and climate change?

I once heard one of these folks say, “it’s almost as though we need to build a machine that sucks CO2 right out of the air”....lol, yeah, they’re called “trees”.

“The science has become crystal clear,” Hansen told reporters

The fraud is crystal clear, James Hansen wants to implement tyranny through the back door of global warming.

Exactly, we already tax them. In fact, I believe the government gets more money (profit) from taxes on a gallon of fuel than do the oil companies.

...so of course the answer is to tax them more ;p Of course, the Dems are all for the poor people these policies will hurt the most!

Yeah, right. Tax fossil fuels and keep using them. The government will spend the tax money on whatever, and nothing will change except the libs will feel good about having done something! And James Hansen will find create some new problem and get more grant money.

As soon as I saw Hansen's name, I stopped reading. These people keep warning yet their "proof" keeps being pushed back a few decades.

I do not think humans impact it as much as these guys think.

Not even a pinprick on an elephant's butt worth, and that mostly localized. I don't think they even believe it themselves. But they'll say what the payers want to hear as long as the grant checks keep coming!

This government grant whore does not tell you that plant life takes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and makes . . .

Oxygen!

"Levels of the planet's three most dangerous effective greenhouse gases are rising..

...in my backyard compost pile. Many consider 1500 ppm CO2 to be optimal for the flourishing of both plants and animals, and commit myself to produce just as much of it as I can until the levels go up almost fourfold.

Why should we settle on anything less than optimal for God's Green Earth?
