US Sisters Found in Seychelles Resort Died of Excess Fluid in Lungs

wo American sisters found unresponsive in their resort in the Seychelles died of excess fluid in their lungs, according to authorities in the island nation off Africa’s east coast.

Autopsies performed Wednesday showed Robin Korkki, 42, of Chicago, and Anne Korkki, 37, of Denver, died from acute pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, police told the Seychelles News Agency.

Cerebral edema, or excess fluid in the brain, also contributed to Anne Korkki’s death, the news agency reported.

No explanation was offered for the fluid buildup in the women’s lungs.

Experts are conducting a toxicology analysis in a forensic laboratory in neighboring Mauritius, according to the news agency.

Although it doesn’t totally fit, it makes me wonder if they did ‘resort diving’ with bad training and supervision and wound up with immersion pulmonary edema combined with severe decompression sickness. Just a thought.

I think that's a very plausible theory at this point. Perhaps their illness a few hours later was misinterpreted by hotel staff as intoxication.

In any case, it's very sad. I know that a lot of folks enjoy these exotic locales, and some may call this a sexist comment, but it seems to me that many American women get themselves in a lot of trouble going to these s--thole countries. How 'bout vacationing in the good ol' U.S. of A, or at least the 1st world (Europe, Australia, NZ).

If you hear hoofbeats outside the window, don’t think zebras, think horses. Common things are common.

Reading the lines, and between the lines: on vacation, intoxicated, had to be escorted back to room, both dead in hotel room, no trauma, no suspicions of foul play mentioned, both with pulmonary edema... It’s most likely drugs — most likely opioids — especially with the pulmonary edema. Alcohol just adds to it and makes it easier to die. Toxicology will tell all.

There have been at least a dozen such deaths in the last 2 years in Seychelles. The local authorities are not enthused about this kind of publicity.
