Maybe you’ve never heard of kratom — a plant from Southeast Asia with large, green leaves that are dried, powdered and taken as a drug with mild, opioid-like effects.
Kratom has been used in Asia for generations — usually chewed or brewed into a tea — as a tonic, painkiller and an aid for people weaning themselves off opium. It can be bought in powder or capsule form at smoke shops across the country.
But dedicated kratom users might want to stock up. As soon as Friday, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) says it will classify kratom as a Schedule I substance, putting it in a class of drugs — along with heroin, peyote and marijuana — that, per U.S. government policy, have “no currently acceptable medical use.” The Schedule I designation will make kratom illegal to possess or sell and more heavily restricted than cocaine or oxycodone.

A ‘Child of the Sixties’, I’ve heard and seen a lot in all the decades since then, but... this is the first time I’ve ever even heard of ‘kratom’!

I was listening to Coast to Coast tonight and kratom was mentioned by a nutritionist. He said CBD cannabinoid oil can be used instead. It’s used for pain, epilepsy, and various other things.
Kratom is mild stuff. One beer gives a better pain killing effect. Just the nanny state overregulating to force more people to big pharma pills.
I had never heard of it either until last year when someone suggested I try it. I have MS and it seems pain at one level or another is a constant. Since my health care is through the VA, I know better than to have a milli-iota of any narcotic or marijuana in my system when I am seen by any PCP at the VAMC. So I tried kratom.
It works fairly well but perhaps I don’t use enough. In any event it has a pleasant taste and within 30 minutes of drinking the tea, I am again able to physically function without “thinking” about pain. That is a blessing.
As far as I can tell from years of experience being involved with drugs as a PCP, the DEA is run by veritable idiots controlled by Big PHaRMa.
They can do that by Fiat? Wow...
In these parts, Kratom is marketed as a cure-all on barely-legible roadside placards. The signs say things like, “Got Stress? Try Kratom!” “Tired? Kratom!”
The regulatory agencies now control the USofA, no need for congress anymore. Oh, yeah, we did it to ourselves.
Yes, however Congress can challenge the recommendation and initiate a legal process in order to stop the reg. In this case, I highly doubt Congress will care.
