An interesting scenario...

Posted on 09/28/2016 1:47:01 AM PDT by djf

I have a bit of a question about things.

Now it seems that it is pretty clear at this point Obama is going to end his term as President. And as many, if not all presidents have done at the end of their term, he will probably issue pardons for people.

So...

What happens if he pardons the President-elect, otherwise known as Hillary Clinton?

How will that go over? Am I missing something? (As usual!!)

Interested to hear others comments.

"Richard Nixon."

That did not enhance Gerald Ford's popularity.

If she could be elected I don’t see how a pardon absolves her from impeachment. I would think impeachment might be limited to removing her from office which would not be “punishment of crime”.

“Suppose Ozero says “I’ll pardon anyone convicted of murder in the future”.”

The president can’t pardon future crimes. He can pardon past crimes before the initiation of legal proceedings.

Meaning, he can pardon Hillary for past crimes before she is charged or indicted.

LOL. Ford has to be the record for shortest Presidency. Youruse of understatement is adept.

Actually wasn’t there a president in the late 1800s who died shortly after taking office. From pneumonia he caught at the Inauguration.

Pardons do not affect impeachment one way or the other. Removal from office via impeachment ends pensions and such, as well as future office-holding and Fed employment.

So even if he pardons her, in the increasingly improbable event she is elected, impeachment proceedings could begin even before she was sworn in.

If she could be elected I don’t see how a pardon absolves her from impeachment.

Impeachment requires a majority of the House.

Removal requires two thirds of the Senate.

Then, and only then, do the the prosecutors get a shot.

The Founders didn't want criminal trial by Congress. That having resulted in an ugly spectacle in the Old Country on 30 January 1649.

Yes. She can be impeached any time based on her stint as Secretary of State. That’s something Dems would seem more likely to try on a Repub in the future.

Yeah. Ford couldn’t even set a record there. I remember hearing Ford actual was a good guy. Recall we knew something was up when Nixon made Agnew resign. Agnew was Nixon’s Impeachment/Assasination Insurance. Rabid Pit Bull! Ford was brought in to “oil the troubled waters”. Notice he even references “disturbing the recently acquired tranquility”... He crafted a bit of a phrase there, eh?

The “Office of Pardon Attorney”?

Cripes. Every time I think the government can’t waste any more money something like this comes along...

I’m kind of wondering how the people would respond.

Obama can’t pardon her.
Obama MUST pardon her!

See what I mean?

Just stick to working to get Trump elected and it’ll be a moot point. Work to convince everyone you know that Hillary’s garbage and there’s great hope for the future with a Trump presidency.

Worrying about who barky’s going to pardon is a little premature.

Just my take on the matter. It seems at times like this race is physically going to kill her and I’ve wondered why she continues (besides greed and a psycopathological desire for power). It seems to me there are a few issues she’s facing.

Emails and security leaks:
She wins - investigations and prosecutions end
She loses - Obama pardons her
She dies - prosecution ends

Clinton foundation crimes:
She wins - investigations and prosecutions ends
She loses - investigations continue under Trump
She dies - investigations continue under Trump

It looks to me like the email issue is a dead end. Her fortune, family, and reputation vulnerability lies with the foundation crimes which are likely
Pay to play
Influence peddling
Security leaks
Misallocation of funds

Can Obama grant pardons in all these areas? Can he really issue a “Hillary Clinton, any of the Clinton family, and any of their employees are exempt from charges about anything and everything” type of pardon?

The foundation is the vulnerability. The question to me is - who is going down for it? I’d hope that it would be more than just some unfortunate lackey.

As I understand it, a President can only pardon FEDERAL CRIMES not state crimes, nor does a pardon provide relief from any civil action.

I think a pardon would cause Hillary more problems then it would resolve. Besides Obama hates Hillary almost as much as he hates Trump.

Even though he was never charged with anything criminally, Ford pardoned Nixon for anything associated w/Watergate in case someone brought charges later.

I wasn’t paying much attention then so don’t know how it went over with the public.

It has to be a federal crime. Murder is almost always a stare level crime.

There is no such restriction. Nixon was pardoned but never even indicted.

As much as I would like your see the beast in jail, I am more worried about a blanket pardon of the crime of illegal entry.
