You might want to sit down for this. On second thought, keep standing. A study published last month in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that sitting for more than three hours per day is responsible for 3.8%or approximately 433,000of all deaths worldwide every year.
At this point, it's old news that sitting for long periods of time is bad for your health. But who knew it could be this deadly? According to a press release, researchers looked at data collected from 54 countries between 2002 and 2011.
They found that more than 60% of the world's population sits for more than three hours per day, with the average being approximately 4.7 hours. The highest amount of sitting-related deaths were in the Western Pacific and parts of Europe, AFP reports.

My 92 yr. old mother is living evidence that sitting does not necessarily kill you. She never was exactly a fitness freak.

“You’ve got to be sitting me” about this study.
At least none of those who died from sitting too much died messily from getting hit by a car. /sarc
Neighbor guy died two years ago. Late 40’s, went jogging every other day 4-5 miles, strict vegetarian, didn’t drink or smoke, in bed by 10 p.m., up at 6, not overweight. Had divorced wife three years before to whom he had been married for ten years. Reason for the divorce: She refused to follow his health regimen, was an alcoholic and smoked a pack of cigarettes every day. She’s still living it up last anyone heard.
The vast majority of my patients were prescribed PT by their doctors simple because they had become weak and unsafe moving around in their homes and communities.
This was simply a product of not having a plan/strategy of daily exercise designed to maintain mobility. Bottom line: If we live long enough and we don't have a systematic approach to maintaining our physical strength we will become what I call “Mobility Bankrupt.” We will outlive our mobility.
This experience and knowledge lead me to develop The Mobility Max 10 Minute Home Exercise System. I use it everyday and my physical fitness is very high.
I developed /manufacture an exercise bar that fits in any door frame and is adjustable to 14 different levels. But just a important, I prescribe a set of 20 fundamental mobility exercises that we should all do everyday. Each exercise is performed for 30 seconds, so all 20 only take 10 minuets.
The door frame mounted bar is adjusted for each exercise and accommodates the size and skill level of the user.

We have been eating the foods that they tell us we shouldn’t, high fat high protein, and we are loosing weight like crazy and feeling great.
WE HAVE BEEN LIED TO!
Cigarettes are saving your life.
I thought about taking up smoking so I could get all of the claimed benefits for quitting smoking.
The balance ball helps you build core muscles and the standing will also help your back.
Good thing I have to get up and walk to the Ice Chest for a Beer!
No refrigerator beer for this guy ...
I just hope I don’t die on the toilet.
It can be so... ironic.
Gives an ominous new meaning to “baby-sitter.”
I’ve struggled with the same thing. I get in 2-3 miles a day. I also switched to a plant based diet, which has helped me.
My office has treadmill desks which helps. Great idea. I’ve discovered I can type in 10 different languages!
What if I sit too long and eat popcorn?
Deadman NOT Walking
Ban semiautomatic recliners.
People who commute to work, via cars and buses and trains and planes, will have to stand up for the whole trip, in both directions. Commuting can be one hour each way, so, that would equal 2 hours of sitting. Flying could be 3-6 hours or more, so, people will not get seats on airplanes either.
Also, democrats are the biggest cause of those many early deaths, since they’re the ones paying people to stay at home and just play games or watch TV, which are “activities” done mostly while sitting down.
