Wow — that’s shocking news. I’ve been out of the baseball loop for a long time and don’t recognize the names of most players, but this guy was the subject of a lot of discussion on the NYC sports radio stations this weekend because he was scheduled to start tomorrow in a key game for the Mets.
dreadful
RIP
He was really good.
3am, a boat on the ocean..., what could go wrong?
Booze and boats are a dangerous combination...
I'm assuming booze was involved...
Hmmmm...... Ocean racer at 3AM in the morn.
Reminds me of my CG days watching the “High Rollers” blasting around out there at all hours of the night.
Alch and or drugs involved, will see,Maybe?
At first, I thought it was a review of the story years ago when two MLB pitchers were killed in a boating accident.
Tim Crews and Steve Olin of the Indians were killed on a Florida lake. The accident also effectively ended the career of Bob Ojeda.
Fernandez would have been an even bigger name had he not missed last year after Tommy John surgery. RIP
Not finding much about the accident other than the boat overturned after hitting rocks and at least 2 others died with Jose. One article said he was a Cuban defector.
Wow, he was a true talent. RISP. I recall a story that he rescued his mother when she feel overboard as they were trying to escape Cuba.
freegards
Defected with his Mother at age 15 after three failed attempts from Cuba.
Finished high school in Tampa and then drafted by the Marlins.
38-17 with a 2.58 ERA for his career. His home record is so dominant it also blows your imagination.
I’m a big lacrosse fan but when I felt like watching a game down here (I live in Boca Raton) I made sure to tune in his starts.
The only person down here who was bigger in the Cuban community was Gloria Estefan and I’d argue he was on his way to bigger things.
Facts reported in the ESPN story up to this point:
1. Fernandez was a passenger in the boat.
2. The Coast Guard found the boat on the rocks at 3:30 AM.
3. I've seen no indication that there was even a report of the incident before the Coast Guard arrived on the scene.
