AuthorEarnings.com has published a report on this very subject, so I jumped into the data. Their May 2016 report reports 1340 authors earn over $100,000 per year on Amazon.com. The striking fact here: Half of them are indies and Amazon-imprint authors.
[Snip]
Interestingly, Big Five-published authors make up a significant portion of the 100k-earners if theyve debuted within the last 100 years. But if you narrow the timeline to those whove debuted within the last decade, indie authors make up an overwhelming amount of the big earners see the figures here. The amount of high-earning, traditionally-published debuts dwindles as we get closer and closer to the present day...

Thank you for the vote of confidence, I think.";^)
Okay, I see he meant publishers, not authors.
It’s good for the consumer! It’s good for the writer! Screw the publisher. I have great stories in my mind but can’t write worth a crap. Day late dollar short. For those who want to give it a try e-books are a great chance for everyone.
Congrats to both of you.
I am published on Kindle as well. I also have paperbacks available, but they are outsold by far by the ebook versions.
About a year ago I got a Kindle and signed up for Kindle Unlimited. Since then I’ve read tons of good books, mostly historical fiction, that aren’t even in print. It’s great to see people able to put their work out there and let people decide if they like it, instead of a handful of publishers deciding for everyone.
Interesting. I’m an avid reader. Pretty much exclusively on my iPhone plus. Lots of the cheaper stuff on iBooks is very good, but I still buy Grisham, Lee Child both have new books coming out soon.
A good buddy of mine is published by Algonquin and he complains that reading is trending downward all over.
There are some upfront business start up costs to consider, such as computer hardware, writing software, professional editing services and book cover design. You also really need a solid marketing plan (author website/blog/mail service/ads, etc...) to launch your book and drive buyers to it to make it financially successful. Many fiction authors write 50-80k books in series as part of a marketing plan to drive readers to their other books.
There are plenty of online and youtube resources available for aspiring writers/self publishers to use as reference "how to" guides. Most of those come from established self published authors willing to share their experiences to help new writers and self publishers get started. Bottom line- you have to be self motivated and driven to write and write consistently, and plenty of writers/self publishers are successful at that formula using e-publishing as their platform.
I’ve got 10 novels on Amazon, all Kindle - no paper.
Good company to publish with, for certain.
Hey, I just took apart my lawnmower carburetor, and put it back together via a YouTube video.
My daughter fixed her washing machine with help from a YouTube video. The repairman said $800. She spent $45 for the needed part, and did it herself.
