Today the Dodgers are celebrating Vin Scully before the game in this final weekend of home games he will call.
It is on broadcast TV
KTLA channel 5
It’s right now.
A photo of Vin, Dick Enberg and Jim Murray in the intro.
The best announcer ever, but an even better man than announcer.
Yep.
He just walked out for the tribute with his wife.
I wrote four letters to the LA Times sports editor over a one year period to see if the Times would get behind Scully calling the first two or three in nines of the All-Star game. I had already tried with Fox Sports.
The fourth letter, I got an e-mail response. Scully had been asked and he declined.
Yes. That would have been great.
He is not going to do the post season games either.
It would be great if he did the WS.
But he is 87 years old.
Check this out if you haven’t seen it.
It’s an article by Vin from 1965.

I was in Pomona, CA then and read Jim Murray all the time, but never saw this. Thanx.

Gibson was on tape at the tribute talking about that call.
The last link to Brooklyn...
Love ya, Vin. Your voice was part of the soundtrack of my youth.
Vin singing along with the National Anthem, conducted by John Williams.
“Vin singing along with the National Anthem, conducted by John Williams.”
That’ll go down in history.
I miss Americans like Vin.
He told a story a few weeks ago about the only time he heard his father curse. They were listening to the radio and the announcement was made that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. His dad swore, and young Vin asked, “What does that news mean?” His father answered, “It means war.”
