MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL’S RATINGS HAVE BEEN BAD, AND THEY’RE ABOUT TO GET WORSE
Awful Announcing ^ | September 21, 2016 | Sean Keely

Primetime ratings for the opening weekend of the 2016 NFL season were not kind. Not only were they down across almost the entire board, Monday Night Football‘s numbers showed signs that last season’s slide might be continuing.

MNF averaged an 8.1 rating for the 2015 season while garnering an average viewership of 12.9 million, down two percent and three percent, respectively. In Week 1 of the 2016 season, the early game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins was the least watched MNF game since 2012 (7.7 rating, 13.0 million viewers), while the San Francisco 49ers – Los Angeles Rams follow-up was the least watched since 2008 (6.2 rating, 10.3 million viewers). Week 2’s showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears generated an 8.3 rating, which is off 11 percent from last year’s second-week match-up and is the lowest since “at least ’09, and likely further back.”

Good post. What's changed here is satellite and cable television, and the ability of NFL fans to tune into games anywhere in the country. It used to be that you were stuck watching only your local game, or another regional game if you had no local team playing in a time slot. Monday Night Football -- one game -- was the only national broadcast you had during the regular season.

I have predicted for several years that the NFL will eventually get to the point where it will have at least one game scheduled in every weekday prime time slot -- except Friday night, perhaps. We'll have Monday Night Football, Tuesday Night Football, etc. Even if their ratings go down, their revenue potential increases dramatically if they never again schedule two games to be played simultaneously. Spreading out 16 games in a typical week into 16 different time slots has tremendous revenue potential, when you think about it. In fact, it's so obvious that I can't believe they haven't done it already.

I started watching the Texans vs Patriots game last night but changed channels in the second quarter after seeing the lackluster performance from the Texans. It was pathetic.

Here's a better alternative to both soccer and football. Jim Brown played both football and lacrosse and preferred the athleticism of lacrosse, but the paycheck of football.

Back in 2014-15 when all the talk was about the Rams moving back to LA, a St Louis sportswriter did a comparison of St Louis Rams attendance over previous five years, when they were uniformly bad, to LA Rams attendance in the mid-80’s, when the Rams were pretty good and often made the play-offs. St Louis attendence was SUBSTANTIALLY higher. Don’t fault the St. Louis fans for not supporting the team until it became clear Kronke was going to move them no matter what.

Come to think of it, maybe that’s part of the cultural Marxists’ plan to tear down all traditions. Has anyone noticed how hard they’ve pushed soccer in the grade schools, starting about 20 years ago?

Absolutely is part of their mission to degrade and destroy popular American culture.

Just like Target says it’s lower sales and traffic has nothing to do with their insulting and dangerous toilet policy.

If their sales and traffic dropped before the toilet policy, is it still the cause?

Might be. But the article says the slide is a continuation from last season.

I think some of the factors in this gradual slide have been going on for a few years. One is the tinkering with uniforms by adding pink or blue for different causes; the other, and probably the thing that has affected my viewing habits the most, is the increased number of penalties. I haven't seen any stats, but ti sure seems that the refs have been throwing a lot more flags in the last few years.

The game used to known for its fast-paced action. Now, with reviews and flags, and numerous commercial breaks, it's like watching a marathon race.

I know it’s hard to give up drugs, and sports has become the opiate of the masses and the “pushers” (which are owned by the left) use it to shape our opinions.

I’ve managed to kick the habit, and now don’t miss it.

and 1/2 the pitchers have gimmicky throwing mechanics. No way they should allow them.

I’d like to see them ditch the pink stuff, too. But the last time I made that suggestion, the trashing I got back was startling. The NFL may be trying to please too many people for too many reasons, eventually pleasing no one.

Sunday is the new Monday.

Sunday night football is usually the top rating getter of the week. It has better match-ups and it is on a regular broadcast network.

Don’t fault the St. Louis fans for not supporting the team until it became clear Kronke was going to move them no matter what.

I don't fault them and that is, in fact, the point. St. Louis sports fans are loyal. Kronke repaid that loyalty by turning his back on those fans when him and the other management of the team didn't get their way.

So piss on Kronke, the LA Rams, the NFL, and Colin Kapernick. I'm done with the whole pack of them.

A TMZ poll indicated that 52% would stop watching as a result.

Between the extreme PCness of ESPN, and the now more pervasive PC quality to the whole of the NFL itself, and now the trashing of the National Anthem and it being allowed to happen by the NFL, the NFL experience is now totally unpleasant. What do they expect to happen when they have turned off almost all of Middle America? They should expect lower ratings, and that is exactly what they are getting. The NFL sure hasn’t read its audience well. Doesn’t seem to know who they are or how they think.

Good point! Wonder if there is any way fans who already purchased tickets can request refunds?

I live in St. Louis, and was a Rams fan. I even went to the final game here, when we knew they were going to leave. At various times I had partial season tickets.

I still love football, and decided that I would try to find a new team to support. The Colts, Titans, Bears and Chiefs are all within driving distance to see a game, so I've looked closer at all them. But, I just can't seem to enjoy watching games anymore. And it's not really the politics of it; the games are just a drag to watch.

And it doesn't help that the NFL seems to be in search of new things to draw in more fans by connecting themselves to many social causes; all the while, they are moving away from what really made the sport great. Non-stop action and great competition.

The sjw and ‘progressive’(USA haters) have been allowed to infiltrate and destroy sports as they are in the process of or have destroyed every institution that made this country great. The nfl players better prepare for substantial income cuts and more oppression. And they deserve it; let them eat cake.
