The answer is correct. The ball costs .05 and the bat costs $1.00 more which is $1.05. The Combined total of both items is $1.10.

Five-plus decades ago, my father, a math teacher, liked to pose almost exactly the same question. Only in his case, it was a bottle and a cork, with the the cork costing a nickel, and the bottle costing a dollar more.

> That first question about the ball and bat is wrong. The answer is wrong. If the ball costs .05 cents but the bat costs a dollar more, the total would be 1.05, not 1.10. Correct me if I am wrong.

While you were trying to figure that out the website uploaded a virus to you...lol

The ball is .05, and the bat is 1.05. Total is 1.10

Are you guys getting different questions each time ? I got the ball and bat question - and phrased the way it is on the site is easy peasy. It’s actually phrased more complicated here.

And the other two took 5 seconds and I got them right.

Are the other questions you’re getting the machines and lilypad question ?

It would be better if the third question was “What is ‘Aleppo’”

That's a small comfort, considering the mental agility of college students these days.A bachelors degree is barely the equivalent of an 8th grade education from 1900.

I can't get the page to load properly but I heard the first question in a lecture by Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel Prize winner in economics who wrote the book Thinking Fast and Slow. He said that 50% of Harvard students get it wrong.

Got it. All of these “brain teasers” are based on vague instructions that seem to be simple but are not. They presume they will be read wrong and that is exactly what I did.

It is a trick question.

Here’s another way to look at it:

kid puts ball on counter

man says that will be 5 cents

kid fishes a nickle out of his pocket and lays it down

kid puts bat on counter

man says that will a dollar more

kid comes up with four quarters, puts them on the counter, and turns to go

man says “wait a minute”, kid turns, man tosses him some bazooka joe.

In that case, you would be correct, BUT, that wasn’t the question. Ball is .05, bat is 1.00 MORE THAN the ball, not an additional dollar. If I have .05 and you have 1.00, you have .95 more than I. For you to have 1.00 more than me, you’d have to have 1.05

Since posters said the site wanted you to download something I didn’t go to the site. Instead I replied to the post which said “a dollar more”, and I replied with humor.

Had the post said “a dollar more than the bat” there would have been no opportunity for humor.
