Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton would impose a 65% tax on the largest estates and make it harder for wealthy households to pass appreciated assets to their heirs without paying taxes, according to an updated version of her tax plan released Thursday.
The estate tax increase and other new proposals from Mrs. Clinton would generate $260 billion over the next decade, enough to pay for her plans to simplify small business taxes and expand the child tax credit, according to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, which advocates fiscal restraint.
In all, Mrs. Clinton would increase taxes by about $1.5 trillion over the next decade, increasing federal revenue by about 4%, though that new burden would be concentrated on relatively few households. There is at least a $6 trillion gap between her plan and the tax cuts proposed by her Republican rival Donald Trump.

Thank you for bringing it up this important point. I think when people think “Estate Tax” they have an idea that it’ll only impact blue bloods - the Downton Abbey types. But this will decimate families trying to pass down farms and SMBs to remain as family concerns.

I don’t buy the “you benefitted from roads, bridges, etc.”.
I paid for them, too. I paid exactly my share just like everyone else.
So, I owe no extra portion of my estate to anyone just because I drove, got an education, etc.

Most if not all of those assets have had taxes already paid on them. Hardly anyone has a huge estate of all tax deferred items. We are talking about tangible assets like businesses and homes and real estate and land.
Death tax is almost all double taxation.
Government can point to nothing tangible it has done to deserve any cut of taxes just because a person dies.

There should not be any death tax, period.
What is the current estate tax situation? I know that my parents had moved everything into a living trust which avoided a lot of hassle. However, I believe that their estate was small enough that current estate taxes would not have been in effect.

As a 4th generation Business owner I agree with you 100% We are taxed and taxed and taxed. Even with the exemptions of the tax we inherit the business at a high cost. Why stay in business ? To provide jobs for hard working Americans. That is why my family business exists. Its very difficult.
