Ericsson to end manufacturing in Sweden?

Swedish telecoms giant Ericsson is planning to end all of its manufacturing in the country, according to a report in newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (SvD).

Part of a savings plan detailed on an internal document which SvD gained access to, the decision would mean that 3,000 employees lose their jobs following the closure of Ericsson’s last manufacturing plants in Sweden, in Borås and Kumla.

In the document, Ericsson’s leadership are said to have stated that “We will end a 140-year-old manufacturing period, which represents the biggest cuts of employees in Sweden ever”. The company employs a total of around 15,000 people in Sweden. …

I would have to guess that any manufacturing was moving to China, because they were laying off large numbers of employees in Central America.

This is bad news in the US. I work for a cellular carrier. There are only a few major cellular hardware makers. The US Government has told the cell carriers that they won't do business with cell companies that have hardware from Chinese makers Huwaei and ZTE. The govt feels that the Chinese companies have backdoors in their equipment, that makes it easy for the Chinese government to hack cellular networks.

So my company uses Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson, partly because they are perceived as more secure. The word in my company is the Huwaei and ZTE basically were trying to give away cellular hardware to our company, because they wanted into the US market so badly. Other than some very small regional companies, the Chinese cellular hardware makers have not entered the US market.

Ericsson leaving Sweden may be a long term issue for US cellular network security.
