To each their own. We purchased an older home last year whose owners had a house cat. We experienced a leak in the basement a few, short months later. The water soaked the carpet in one of the bedrooms.

Guess what. We found out where the house cat peed. Wet carpet and cat urine is terrible. New carpet installation ensued shortly thereafter.

I have several barn cats at the research facility that I manage. I love them in that setting. My cats keep the rats and sparrows at bay. Overnight, a damn pack rat can chew the wiring in a tractor.... @ $1,000 in damage give or take.

Too bad about the cat urine issues in the house. Unless a cat is ill or in end stages of life, the problem is with the owner(s) and not the cat. We have six indoor cats. They’re the proverbial “scaird-y cats” and go into hiding at the sound of a doorbell or a strange voice, so our friends and visitors almost never see them.

We’ve sold a few homes and potential buyers and buyers were shocked to learn later that we have “a” cat — much less six — because they never saw them. We’d put away toys and litter boxes before a showing. There is no smell. There were no cat “accidents”.

If the owner doesn’t maintain the boxES (always more than one) frequently and diligently there will be problems. Not the fault of the cats.

It makes me sad that people will dispose of pets for reasons like this, when the fault lies with the owners themselves. They’ll adopt a pet with no clue about care and behavior and just wing it. The pet ultimately pays the price.
