This press event was called because we're back to the old birther nonsense again ...
No. The campaign event was scheduled before the birther nonsense was a hot issue. The WaPo interview, where Trump said he would talk about this later, triggered the press into a spasm. The Trump campaign statement didn;t cure the spasm, the press insisted that Trump say "Obama was born in the US" out of his own mouth. So he tole the press he would add remarks directed to the press badgering to his previously scheduled campaign event.
Cue Sheppard Smith temper tantrum.

Wasn’t it great that Trump tricked them into letting the American people see what was happening, first hand, without the filter and the distortions which would surely have come? I’ll be they are mad. They want to edit, distort and twist the meaning of the event before it was put on the air. Yesterday, the people got to see, at least, a little bit of unfiltered news.
As far as the “Birther issue,” the media made that taboo a long time ago. It will take time for historical researchers who are interested to find out how that started, how it was handled by the media, and why people felt the matter was unsettled. Some people worried a lot about the Constitution. When other people are running the country and emotions on this have passed, someone may find the answers to what has vexed us. Until then, we have more important matters to think about.
