The U.S. Air Force has grounded 13 Lockheed Martin Corp F-35A Lightning II aircraft after discovering peeling and crumbling insulation in avionics cooling lines inside the fuel tanks, an Air Force spokeswoman said on Friday.

The disclosure was made less than two months after the Air Force announced that an initial squadron of the F-35A stealth fighters were ready for combat, marking a major milestone for the $379 billion program, the Pentagon's largest weapons project.

I didn’t know the engineers won that one on running any lines but fuel probes in a fuel tank. They would propose doing such as it looks good on paper but us maintenance guys told them what could go wrong. This was one of the minor problems one might encounter.

This was and is a ‘follow the money’ boondoggle from start to finish.

I think the Lefthander-In-Chief should take the F-35 up for a test flight himself.

Can pilots refuse to fly this disaster on the grounds that they are risking their lives if they take it up?

Somebody please tell me that they’re not using fuel for avionics cooling. Engineers have suggested it in the past.

The F-35 has fully liquid cooled avionics using a close cycle liquid system. So they had to dump the heat somewhere. Not surprising that something that novel has some teething.

No... but they use fuel to cool the liquid that IS use to cool the avionics.

They are PLANNED to not reach their Silkworm targets
1500 km away.

Can anyone guess why?

It’s not novel. Using the fuel system to dump heat has been is use for decades.

they should get hazardous duty pay on top of their flight pay

Pilots and crews flew the B-29’s, which were very dangerous at first, when they were working out the bugs, so I guess this is no different.
