Marilyn is rendered in low frequency information (no sharp edges) and Albert is rendered in high frequency information (all sharp edges.)

If your eyes are out of focus, that is essentially a low pass filter and Albert is filtered out so all you see is Marilyn. Likewise, if your eyesight is normal but you back of enough that Albert’s details are finer than the resolution of your eyes, again Albert is filtered out and you can see Marilyn again.

You can create a low pass filter by squinting your eyes until things are out of focus. When you do, Marilyn appears.

Interesting. I have really bad vision. If I take off my glasses and squint until my eyes are almost shut I see Marilyn.

If I open then and get back a few feet I see Marilyn.

Otherwise , Albert.

Well, old Al *was* a pretty sharp guy, and I doubt you’d find many people who wouldn’t agree that Marilyn was more about curves than edges.

Everybody looks better when you squint your eyes.
