I see houses are cheap in Texas mostly, but I don’t know much about the cost of living there etc.

Montana, Idaho , Wyoming, Texas, Georgia ..... All great places to be. Use the Internet to find jobs. Only ones you can’t be hired for are ones that say not eligible for sponsorship. Move the family once you have the job. Welcome aboard and become citizens as soon as possible

Yes, Midland is flat, hot, and dusty. Did I mention hot? And it’s expensive when there’s an oil boom on, and starve-to-death poor in a bust. I would suggest you look for an area with a wide variety of industries that could use your skills, not a one-pony show.

My husband is a computer networking engineer. When oil and telecom went bust in 2002, there was nothing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. However, here in Charlotte, North Carolina, there are at least a dozen industries that are dying for his skills. He worked for a retail chain when we moved here, but now he’s with an investment firm, and the City of Charlotte called just yesterday.

I’m far past a handyman, though I don’t mind it. I do a lot of automation and controls, programmable logic controllers, I don’t want to sideline my career too much. I’ve run bigger crews, build plants and well sites etc. I’m sure those things are needed. I just only want to make one move and not do it again, I’m not a spring chicken anymore heh.

It’s very localized. All things being equal, though, costs are low except for housing in a boom area.

As a one time resident of Tampa, FL., stay away. The locals will thank you for it.

No offense to you. And you’re welcome here. But the migratory foul, known as the Canada Blue Hair, has given Canucks a bad name down there. I always used to shudder when fall came along. I had too many near death experiences on I275 due to migratory Canada plates.

And I’m not joking.

I wish I could help you with your dilemma, but I’m not in your trade. I do wish you the best on your journey.

FReegards.

I thought I’d still have to pay Canadian tax?

Good points though, this is why I posted, I love the amount of knowledge Freepers possess heh.

My current company does operate in midland too. Isn’t it flat and hot and dusty? I heard expensive too.

....1. How difficult is it for a trades guy such as myself to work in the south. (visas, and such) ....

Well you said you wanted to work in the south. I guess you need to define south. Sounds like
you are wanting something south of you but not necessarily in the south USA.

A friend of my son moved his family to Midland 15 years ago, from MA,and they said they’d be back in two years.

They are still there and they are staying.

Some folks up here call me a wannabe American to attempt to insult me heh.

I should state though that I’m not Canadian, I’m Albertan. It’s a lot like a Texan being a Texan first heh.

From what you listed, I’d invite you to Texas. Oil & Gas is in the blood in TX, OK, NM & LA. (lifeblood of the state)

You might look here: (and ask some questions)

http://www.indeed.com/q-Oilfield-Electrician-jobs.html

I suspect there are some Canadian companies doing business in TX.

I have no idea about the issues relating to citizenship.

Texas is full of people who love guns and hunt. We may need that ability again someday. smile

Food is great, Climate is really nice in the winter, hot and dry in most parts in the summer.

We have no state income tax. Property values are relatively low.

We have our pockets of Lefties, mostly in Austin and some parts of Houston. Rest of the state is pretty freedom loving.

Let me know if I can help. Not sure how to advise you, but welcome anyway.

My #2 son is taking diesel mechanics at Central Piedmont, but he does think he wants to finish the program. Maybe he’d rather get his transfer credits and go after a chemistry degree. GAH!!! You’d think with 11 people in a 2,400 sqft house, somebody would want to MOVE OUT!
