Combat was in black and white for the first few seasons to take advantage of actual footage from WW2.

Also, the series was shot in then rural southern California and did not resemble a milder northern France climate.

I preferred the black and white Combat episodes. Color made the sets look too fake. B/W made it look like the old WWII movies.
