That's just how irrational thinking works unfortunately.

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

The parent is the shepard, full of love and wisdom, thus it is a the rod/staff of a shepard. This is how I see it and was brought up to believe.
