The numbers don’t really mean much at this stage. But the things that support optimism include how far the polls have to skew the samples to show a Clinton lead, the direction the numbers are moving in, the evident enthusiasm of the two campaigns and their supporters, and the fact that Clinton has been spending like a lottery winner in July and August just to stay even while Trump waits to spend when it counts.
