I’m not paying attention to the article, though the Trump people said there was misunderstanding between what the council members thought they heard him say and what he did say—specifically that he never said that he was going to “legalize” the illegals.

He said, because he was asked, that he is not flip-flopping. He slammed a Buzzfeed writer for having got wrong whether he would run for president, and said they were “about as accurate” on this as on that. But then he clearly, repeatedly, and emphatically said that we have to be “firm but fair” with illegals that are already here and that they’re working with the Hispanic community to come up with something that is “firm but fair”. He is implying that simply being “firm” by enforcing our immigration laws somehow isn’t “fair” and thus he needs to come up with a program that will be “fair”.
