Yes, he is a patriot. It is also part of his military training. It is drilled into you whether you’re an officer or enlisted that if you hear our national anthem, you stop what you’re doing... WHATEVER you are doing... And you stand at attention.

I was taught the same thing as you. Hand over heart for the pledge, stand at attention for the anthem. Yes, and I think if someone is in a respectful posture during the anthem, people should back off. You don't know what etiquette was taught as a youth.
