Kentucky is about three states in one.....eastern, central and western.
Western is more southern/Midwest. Eastern is, well, unusual. And central is quite nice.
My friend is from the East, and that is where I would personally want to go... were I single. Just be alone and not bothered.
But the lack of jobs out there make for some pretty bored kids / desperate adults.
A combination I wouldn’t want to raise my family in.
The central part appears to be what we’re looking for. A good balance of civilization and 100+ acre parcels. I don’t mind working 40 minutes away (I own my own business, and have re-occurring revenue so I don’t really need to work work. But I would take on clients in the city)

My job often takes me to KY, and I agree with your assessment. Eastern KY (especially SE KY) is another world. To say it is “unusual” is being tactful, and generous.
