Frozen strawberries imported from Egypt and used by Tropical Smoothie Café locations in Virginia are possibly linked to a cluster of Hepatitis A infections, spurring state health officials to issue a public health warning.

The restaurant chain has already pulled the implicated strawberries from all of its restaurants, not just the 100 locations in Virginia, according to a company statement issued today.

“Individuals who consumed a smoothie from a Tropical Smoothie Café in Virginia that contained frozen strawberries on Aug. 5, 6, 7 or 8 may still benefit from vaccine or immune globulin to prevent Hepatitis A,” the Virginia Department of Health warning said.

We don’t grow strawberries in America??? We are sick and tired of getting sick because food companies buy cheap junk from other countries and charge us top dollar for the finished product. Every time this happens, the offending merchant ought to be sued out of existence. Buy food products locally or at least from other parts of the USA. About the only thing you’d have to import is coffee and tea.

There was a case recently of boneless chicken that was actually rat meat coming from China.

Be careful what you eat.

Giorgio mushrooms briefly were sourced from China. They saw such a crash in sales they immediately went back to USA product.

I’m so glad I will never be tempted to eat strawberry... anything. Only fresh strawberries for me, thank you.

There’s a Hep A outbreak in HI that’s been traced to scallops from the Philippines, iirc.

I’ve been telling my kids and grandkids who love smoothies that they are nuts.

They should drink black coffee, iced or hot,as I do. :-)

I did not know Hep could be spread that way, and that it could survive temperature changes, lie in wait, dormant and ready to inflict illness.

A couple of years ago, food companies were importing pine nuts from China to fill a shortage.

Different type of pine, affecting some portion of the population with "pine nut mouth", where just about everything tasted metallic, typically lasting days or a couple of weeks for most, to months for the less fortunate.
