The passengers are tramping down snow above the sea ice that has trapped them in the antarctic sea ice. the packed snow will be used for a helicopter landing pad to carry the tourists/passengers/propagandists out, rather than ferry food and supplies to the real scientists in the antarctic camps who need it.
