Over the past several years, the sports media have presented several stories of youth athletes who have become addicted to prescription painkillers and eventually turned to heroin.
In fact, one of these reports in Sports Illustrated was ominously titled 'How painkillers are turning young athletes into heroin addicts.'
The narratives in these reports typically revolved around a young male athlete who sustained an injury, was prescribed painkillers to manage pain after surgery and eventually developed a dependence on these medications.
This dependence then subsequently escalated into a heroin addiction, as heroin is a cheaper and more available alternative to prescription painkillers.

I can think of nothing worse than living the life of a junkie. Pray for the addicts.
Absolutely they are. And non-athletes. We prescribe opioid painkillers like candy and the are shocked to find out people get hooked before the scrip runs out.
I don’t know, the Jury is still out.
When I was 18 I had a bad motorcycle accident and had major road rash that required almost 2 sq feet of Skin Grafting. This was in 1978. I was given a prescription for ALL THE PERCODAN I could eat for 3 months before the surgery. YES I became addicted, but after the surgery I went through withdrawls in the hospital, it was terrible and swore to Never ever go through it again. As a result I don’t take pain pills until it is absolutely necessary and Yes I have a bottle of Vicodin in my truck.
FYI
Percodan was before Oxycodone
Oxycodone was before Oxycontin. The only difference is what it is cut with
Aspirin,Codein,Acetominiphen.
On of my old friends was an addict 40 years ago. Kicked it. Just had a skin cancer removed and the doc gave him Hydrocodone. He threw it away!
Here’s a ‘slight’ diversion...
Washington Redskins can be:
Washington Opioids
Washington ___Killers = [pain]killers
This is very true. My son spent 2 months in jail, 4 months on house arrest and 2 years probation to prove it. He said he didn’t think he would become addicted, he just wanted some relief from a back injury. He said the addiction happened almost immediately. The drug suppresses your will and no matter how much you want to be free from the drug you can’t do it yourself. Sounds weird, but he was very thankful for having to go to jail and all that they required of him. It was what he needed to get clean. He said no one could pay him to take back the helplessness you feel. I was fortunate that in the fact that I didn’t know any of it until he was in jail. We told him he had one shot to get clean where we would help him, after that he would be on his own except for a visit once a week in jail. It has been over 2 years that he has been clean. We’re all very proud of him!
Pain killers almost ruined Brett Favre’s career. He was so addicted to them that he couldn’t poop for days.
Now we make pills specifically too control opioid caused constipation. Which really is all the proof we need these things are over prescribed.

I know how true that is, I worked for years in the pharmaceutical industry. Manufacture and distribution of Schedule II narcotics.
Is the pharmaceutical Cartel under-regulated? I was at one time VERY familiar with the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) and (IMO) they are obscenely OVER-regulated.
For me, it was done intentionally, we All knew it, theyreally had no choice in the matter though, it was either pass out in shock immediately or eat the opiates like candy. I chose the Candy and it worked.
There is this thing called personal responsibility.....
After knee surgery, I spent three days eating pain killers....
Day four was the day I quit because I could feel it getting a grip on me...
I sucked it up took over the counter pain killers. ( I did take about twice the recommended dosage for a few days)
A week after surgery I was getting to the point I could take normal dosages...
By two weeks out, I didn’t need anything...
“...I am not convinced”
Same here.
Opioid abuse is just the latest ‘boogie-man’ created by the government to control the aging masses that live their lives in constant pain.
A rapidly growing elderly population needs relief from pain in order to function, even at the lowest level of physical activity throughout the day.
The “War on Drugs” is total bull-crap and a waste of Billions of taxpayer dollars.
If they were serious about keeping heroin out of our country we would not have made a deal with the Taliban to not firebomb their poppy fields. We would build a wall to keep Mexican black tar heroin, liquid meth, etc. from entering the United States. We would stop arming the drug cartels.
War on Drugs, my a$$. It’s all about money & power.
Ya nailed it Pan !
Thanks, snooter
Nope.
Yup, when you see commercials for opioid constipation on daytime TV you know there’s a problem. I think the increase in the suicide rate of middle aged white women has a lot to do with the pill/heroin epidemic. The cartels saw a business opportunity.
They say the benzos are really bad to withdrawal from as well.
Freegards
The US is 5% of the worlds population and consumes 80% of the prescription narcotics. Way too many people think they should never ever have even a little pain. I’ve had parents lean on me to prescribe narcotics to a 12 year old with a sprained ankle.
If the child was in pain and you did not prescribe something to temporarily relieve it then I feel you were violating your ‘Do No Harm’ oath.
A few days of something as mild as a Tylenol 3 would have made your patient more comfortable while he/she mended.
I’m sure that a 12 year old is not going to run out and seek heroin from the local drug dealer when they get back their feet.
Get real.
