If true it's clearly wrong.But having some knowledge of Brazil (two visits,one which involved a friend being robbed at gunpoint in Rio) I'm very,very suspicious of this story.Brazil is not *Third* World...it's *Fourth* World.Corrupt to the core.It's Mexico speaking Portuguese.It must be acknowledged that government officials routinely threaten people...particularly foreigners...in many,many ways.
My money's still on armed robbery.

It is looking like a chapter of Ugly Americans, but I suppose you could be right. They could have been told they had better confess or they would spend a long time in Brazil while their charges worked their way through a corrupt legal system.
