Last year the good people at Whirlpool created the Whirlpool Care Counts Program and donated seventeen pairs of washers and dryers to school districts in St. Louis and in Fairfield, California. The schools then invited kids with attendance problems to bring in their laundry to be cleaned while they were in class.

The results were astounding: over 90% of participating students increased their attendance that year, at-risk students attended almost two more weeks of school, and each student got approximately 50 loads of laundry done at school.

The article seems to be saying the laundry is done for the students ... not that they are learning to do laundry themselves

and each student had 50 loads, now think about that for a minute.................................

I’d wager these kids who attend but hate school end up distracting kids genuinely interested in learning.

Don’t I know it. Retired teacher here. There should be two kinds of schools — one for kids who want to go to school, irrespective of grades, and one for the kids who don’t. The students who don’t want to be there rob the others by diverting class time.

Whirlpool can get credit for donating the machines, but who has the laundry duty? Do the schools hire someone? Unless someone is volunteering, the taxpayers are picking up the tab.

When I was in the Navy on a ship, the way we got our clothes washed was by putting them in a bag like the one below with our name and dept on it, then it was picked up and dropped off. It it means kids can feel better about showing up for school then great but we still need to get the lib-prog brainwashing (slight pun) and indoctrination out of schools altogether. It could even be part of a larger program about taking care of oneself. It's amazing how many kids grow up without some very basic skills because no one was around to show them or their parents were just lazy.

Yes, it’s important that the check still comes in.

Those checks, EBT cards, WIC, clothing, furniture and housing - it’s as if we are pouring miracle grow on an area in the garden that produces no vegetables.

Having read your response to Eccl 10:2, I keep recalling this article:

Thank you. That is my big thing
I hated being in school with kids who did not want to be there and were disruptive.

Who is going to foot the bill for new washing machines for other skools? What about the current free ones if they break down? The taxpayers will end up footing the bill. My point. Didn’t require too much thinking, did it.

I would agree. We did that here in Indianapolis. Simple khaki pants and polo shirts.

Who’s paying for the heated water, electricity, supplies and launderers?
