As much as a law-and-order person as I am, prisons without AC in Texas is like being confined to a “hot-box” you see in prison camp movies. It can get to well over 100 degrees, health-threatening.

I can see having AC in a prison’s medical facility for at risk older/elderly inmates or those to whom extreme heat could be deadly - otherwise, nope.

Nope. I work in 100 degree plus heat running a machine. No ac for me and my health is suffering. Screw you if you are in jail sitting on your butt in the heat. If you have a problem with it maybe you shoulda thunk it over before you did what got you there. I cut steel and it’s hot, my metal working brothers in heat treat, welding, and foundry work got it worse, and they are are making a living not feeding off the system like this parasite.

Air conditioning did not even exist until around 1910.

I went to public school in the 1970s with NO air conditioning at all. On super hot days they would let us out early at 1 or 2pm.

How did prisoners cope before 1900?

I say take away their cable TV AND exercise equipment.

Prison is SUPPOSED to be punishment.

Why do I have to solve everything? Buy surplus slightly dated air conditioners that won’t sell from the manufacturer. Just buy the equipment. Offer the inmates classes on installation and maintenance.

Point at the boxes on the parking lot and tell them to learn how they work and install them. Tell them if they break you will get them repair parts. And there are so many Mexicans in Texas prisons they are guaranteed to have experience in that field.

Have a kill switch in the Wardens office. Any fight or crime of violence, it turns off for a week.

Free behavior modification, and maybe a job skill and learning a little responsibility.
