Fred Thompson was a fake candidate. He never intended to win, he was acting as a blocker for McCain.

Fred never intended to run, but people made such noise about how he'd be such a great candidate.

I notice that he and McCain were friends and McCain spoke at his funeral, but there didn't have to be any collusion.

His heart just wasn't in the race.

Fred also had some serious health problems that had to play into the decision. Ultimately, the Big C got him. I always liked Fred.
