The whole “Watergate Scandal & Traveling Road Show” has been payback to Nixon for his work on the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).

Nixon should have handled the aftermath better, but no one was molested in the White House, ended up dead in Ft. Marcy Park (or on a fog shrouded Croatian mountaintop), made $100+ million through payoffs/bribes funneled through “speaking fees”, drowned in an Oldsmobile, etc.

The book Silent Coup is perhaps the best explanation of who and what was behind the Watergate break-in, and if the authors are correct it all began with John Dean and his callgirl fiance/wife.

G. Gordon Liddy was certainly convinced that Colodny and Gettlin had uncovered the truth, and that with his silence he (Liddy) had been unknowingly protecting Dean rather than Nixon.
