Olympic organisers insist they have sold 84 per cent of the 7.5million tickets they were hoping to sell to the public but images from this summer's Games tell a different story...

Another major factor is the fact that Brazilians have simply not taken a fancy to the likes of hockey and rugby sevens as they are not traditional South American sports.

THANK YOU! FIELD hockey...

I thought they were saying no one wanted to go the the Olympics because of all of the HORSE hockey.

Olympics jumped the shark in the mid 80s.

I suspect that the competition is just an excuse for all the corruption.

NBC coverage is 90% self-important media staff. Very little show of the actual athletes in competition.

The author might phrase the question a little differently if he really wants an answer: why would a resident of a Rio favela pay a year's salary for a seat at the second round of women's field hockey between Senegal and Outer Mongolia? Food, clothing, and shelter (such as it is) strike me as wiser choices. Why would such an individual not resent the influx of elite athletes, elite fans, elite journalists, and very elite organizers, all of whom will profit nicely from the experience where the local fan is only going to be inconvenienced?

If I, who am certainly not a resident of a favela, decided to risk my neck to view a rousing round of competition trampoline - I'm not making that up - the air fare is around $1800, the hotels are outrageous even if you can find one, the environment a toxic brew of festering corpses, exotic pathogens, and with all the personal safety of 80's Beirut...oh, yeah, and what did you say those event tickets cost again? Might all of that have a little to do with the empty seats, dontcha think?

The Olympics were irreparably damaged by the rise of Bob Costas. I haven’t watched a single event this year because I don’t wish to hear his smarmy voice telling me I need to have my gun controlled. Is he on the broadcast this year?

“Brazil is messed up. If you’ve been to Rio, you’ll see the favelas all around you.”

Been there a few times. Last time I was there I stayed on the ipanema side. The copacabana side had too many hookers. Walked out of hotel on the way to dinner and right before our eyes a car races down the street and crashes full speed into a light pole, killing everyone in the car. People were just walking by like nothing had happened.

You need to check some of the videos over at LiveLeak. In one of thsm, during a motorcycle robbery, a cop shoots the robber dead just like that in front of everyone. No one noticed anything, just another day in Brazil, nothing unusual.

Because the Olympics don’t offer what people want, duh. Consumers vote with their wallets.

I think you’d have to be nuts to go to Brazil for any sporting event.

Zika virus and banditos everywhere.

In the late 70s my boss got transferred to our Brazil operation, he got robbed and shot in his house. Thankfully survived and moved back.

If wasn’t for curling, Winter Olympics would be a ratings bust.
