North Korean workers are being given a methamphetamine-based drug in the hope it will speed up a major construction project, according to reports.
Project managers in the city's capital of Pyongyang are said to be under so much pressure to finish the job on time that they have resorted to openly providing builders with the drug.
Nicknamed "ice," it is a form of the powerful stimulant methamphetamine, which is also known as crystal meth.
When snorted or inhaled, crystal meth gives users a sense of euphoria, increased energy levels and a suppressed appetite. The effects can last up to 12 hours.
Hundreds of thousands of North Korean citizens have been roped in to finish the project, which consists of a 70-floor skyscraper and more than 60 apartment blocks.
It was approved earlier this year by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in defiance of tough sanctions placed on the hermit state over its nuclear weapons tests.
Project managers are now openly providing drugs to construction workers so that they will work faster, a construction source in Pyongyang told Radio Free Asia.
"[They] are undergoing terrible sufferings in their work."
Human rights workers in Asia said the working conditions amounted to slave labour and urged the UN to take further action against Kim Jong-un.
Phil Robertson, Asia director for Human Rights Watch, said: Its going to be hard to verify that this is happening, but if it is confirmed then we utterly condemned it.

Over the years, there have been some reports out of N. Korea saying that many ordinary people and even officials are using it. Now they are bring it to a new level. I suspect it is not officially sanctioned, but officials in charge of project are under great pressure to meet the deadline. They know what is the price for failure these days. So it is not hard to imagine that officials are surreptitiously giving it to workers to work longer and faster. By now it may be an open secret.
P!
Probably not a problem as long as they give the building inspectors LSD so they can experience an alternate reality during the inspection.
The result will be a methed-up structure, I fear.
When the NK government finally collapses, Seoul is going to have an enormous rebuilding task on its hands.
Like this doesn’t happen here. Not given by the bosses but this is a common thing especially in certain early morning jobs.
Yeah, but is it ‘Breaking Bad’ pure?
Just what I want to do....go in a skyscraper built by people on meth.
Oh wow! What could possibly go wrong!, ; (
Inspectors? I don’t think they have those. At least not real ones.
For the cost of the drug they could have just fed them real food.
63 years. How much does the South owe us?
Engineering’s Rule of 3 is in play: fast, good, cheap...you get to pick only 2.
In this case they picked fast and cheap therefore the result will not be good. Its surprising how often this rule is disobeyed with less than happy consequences.
Not if they hired Heisenberg and Jesse Pinkman.
Would you want to ride to the 30th floor on an elevator installed by a guy who’d been up working for 36 hours under the influence of a mind altering drug?
Could there be a more ‘methed-up structure’, than the famous ‘Hotel of Doom’?
Its none of our business. Conditions are already so bad in North Korea, if their citizen don’t do anything about it, its their own fault
Ah yes, this completely empty beauty....
What, exactly, do you want them to do about it? They have no way to organize or even to share information between them; no right to assemble, peaceably or otherwise; and no weapons with which to fight. What’s more, they’re on the brink of starvation, and the only way to obtain the mere scraps that they do get is to bow down to Dear Leader.
Sad to say, but North Korea will not be freed from within. It will either be liberated from without, or left to collapse under the weight of its leaders’ evil and stupidity.
