Rio Olympics: NBC Opening Ceremony Miraculously Makes Brazil Boring
Deadline Hollywood ^ | August 5, 2016 | Dominic Patten

Sustainability, the Brazilian resourcefulness trait of gambiarra and smiling were the designated themes of the globally aimed Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. By that criteria, NBC’s time-delayed coverage tonight barely got a bronze medal with less than qualifying pacing, insipid and sometimes questionable commentary, unimaginative production, and way too many ads that resulted in the amazing feat of turning a Brazilian celebration into a bit of a bore.

Far closer to real time than the last several Olympic openers and considering all that could have gone wrong with this relatively low-budget affair in the socially and politically conflicted nation, the results of the beginning of South America’s first-ever Games were solidly mixed — despite NBC’s best or worst efforts.

I watched some via streaming.

They had a bunch of different colored ‘pod’ people in strange costumes. I had the volume low. I finally upped the volume. They were not even keeping rhythm with the music. But, the music wasn’t that good anyway.

Gustovo (IIRC) who carried in the torch acted like he had been whiffing the fumes. He handed it off. It finally got to a big kettle which rose — and my internet stream cut out. By the time I reloaded, there was a star-bursting show of lights in and around the stadium for several minutes. And ‘this stream has ended’.

The stream I watch on had no commentary, was ‘live’, and no commercial breaks.

During the live thread there were many complaints about the number of commercial breaks NBC had.

I will probably watch some venues, but they will be streaming or TiVo recorded so I can jump over commercials and the typical inane NBC commentaries.

“Has liberal political correctness infected absolutely everything nowadays????”

pretty much, but ESPECIALLY with anything NBC has to do with.

I noticed they had a shot of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio that was illuminated in the Brazilian flag colors.

No blasphemy there. /s

“Sustainability, the Brazilian resourcefulness trait of gambiarra and smiling....”

See the photos of Rio. There is garbage everywhere.
The kids play in it.
Only thing missing is Leonardo Di Capio giving a speech about saving the planet before he boards his private jet.
