Governor Cuomo Signs Legislation to Exempt Sales and Use Taxes on Feminine Hygiene Products
New York State ^ | 7/21/16 | New York State

TOP Governor Cuomo Signs Legislation to Exempt... SHARE Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed legislation that eliminates sales tax on feminine hygiene products.

The bill (A.7555-A/S.7838) exempts these products from local and State sales tax.

“This is a regressive tax on essential products that women have had to pay for far too long and lifting it is a matter of social and economic justice,” Governor Cuomo said. “I commend Assemblywoman Rosenthal and Senator Serino on their strong advocacy and for hard work in passing this important legislation.”

Feminine hygiene products have been taxable since the state sales tax was first instituted in 1965, even as a wide variety of other goods, such as dietary and family planning products, have been exempt.

New York is one of the first states to join the movement to exempt feminine hygiene products from sales tax, which is expected to save women purchasing tampons, and other similar products, an estimated $10 million a year.

Senator Sue Serino said, “With the signing of this bill today, we are taking a monumental step forward in reforming our out-of-touch tax laws and we are sending a strong message to New York’s women that they are being heard. This day is long overdue and I commend Governor Cuomo, as well as my colleagues in the Senate, for helping to finally make this tax a thing of the past. It is my hope that we can continue down the path of applying commonsense to our tax laws as we work to make our state more affordable for all New Yorkers.”

Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal said, “I am proud that my bill exempting feminine hygiene products from state and local sales tax has been signed into law by the Governor. The signing of this bill into law represents a new dawn. Women statewide will no longer be burdened by a lingering tax that was levied at a time when women were not part of government and the decision-making process. The tampon tax is regressive, and lifting it will spare all women the extra monthly burden of paying taxes on products that are already unaffordable to many.”

The Onion, right? Or once again, truth is stranger than fiction.

Next, Gov. Cuomo will call upon male New Yorkers to show their solidarity with women’s issues by sitting whenever they take a whizz.

Well, there’s one down. Now how about we end property taxes? Allow people to actually OWN their own homes?

Everybody needs shelter. I think that this is a regressive tax that harms the elderly, minorities, the poor, and women the most. Even white males, although we really don’t care about that. (That argument seems to work! Let’s use it!)

We also need to stop taxing baby products. We’ve got a diaper tax, a formula tax, a baby food tax, baby clothes tax... and babies NEED developmental toys.

(Guys! If we play our cards right, we might actually be able to lower taxes across the board. Sneaky!)

Well, isn’t that just special? The payment of the sales tax on these products may or may not make the difference whether “very poverty-stricken” females have market access to these products. Women of greater financial means, of course, would not need the “incentive” to purchase these necessities.

How about putting a price control on products like this, and assure that they then may be accessible to ladies of limited means?

So this will save a woman from NY about .34 cents a month, an astounding $4.08 a year for the purchase of tampons. But the chicks will go crazy and this will be EVERY reason to keep Democrats in office. A disgusting pandering to women.

any health or food products should be exempt from sales tax

All medical bills should be tax deductible

Two of the most common sense things on the planet and the government can’t get them right

Will liberal women be able to use a product if they did not pay the use tax on it, or will their heads disconnect like Hillary being asked a question?

This is one of the most cynical ways of putting on a show of caring about women without actually doing anything.

Let’s assume $10 per month spent on feminine products. At a sales tax rate of 8%, that would save a whopping 80 cents per month, or $9.60 per year. Enough to buy another box of feminine products—or a fast food meal—or a pizza—or some other minor purchase per year.

Meanwhile, families are staggering under tax rates that just keep growing, and government that keeps ballooning with nothing really to show for it.

If these democrats really wanted to help women, they would be looking at ways to cut costs by getting rid of redundancy, streamlining, and ditching ineffective programs, with the end goal of reducing the size of government and the tax burden. But, of course, they don’t want to do that—so they instead make a symbolic and useless gesture of making feminine products tax-free.

I’m actually surprised the libs stopped at just exempting tampons from taxes. Maybe that’s just the first step. I can envision calls for gov’t provided plugs and pads for the disadvantaged. They care.
