This past week I went on vacation with some friends from high school, one of which is a drummer in a band that is perplexed by this same question.
In a moment of drunken confusion, one of us meant to say “cockpit” and came out with “cock pilot”. I think it stuck...

I actually was in a band of sorts. We cobbled together a Blues ensemble at the campground the Mrs. and I frequent.
We were "Trailer Trash".
