I'm a big fan of the Marseilaise in Casablanca but this might be better. Roberto Alagna demonstrates why world class trained singers are the ones who are world class.

"We'll water our fields with Saracen blood!"
That anthem describes today precisely.
Arise children of the fatherland
The day of glory has arrived
Against us tyranny’s
Bloody standard is raised
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts
To arms citizens Form your battalions
March, march
Let impure blood
Water our furrows
What do they want this horde of slaves
Of traitors and conspiratorial kings?
For whom these vile chains
These long-prepared irons?
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
What methods must be taken?
It is us they dare plan
To return to the old slavery!
What! These foreign cohorts!
They would make laws in our courts!
What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would cut down our warrior sons
Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brow would yield under the yoke
The vile despots would have themselves be
The masters of destiny....
The first several lines....
Quiz: Which modern national anthem references Napoleon in the lyrics?
Beautiful — but I’m still partial to teary-eyed, rejected Yvonne. ;-)
I wonder if “older” French people feel detached from their anthem, the way I do from July 4th and other flag-waving days since 2008...?
Two `l’s’ in `Marsellaise’.
Unlike the `Mayonnaise’ which is played only before battle while the army is dressing.
;^)
Thatone was good but I like this one best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIxOl1EraXA
Me too. I chopped it very quickly.
Quiz: Which modern national anthem references Napoleon in the lyrics?
Poland?
I think it's Poland's, although I haven't heard it in a long time.
Louis XVI was the king of France in 1789.
He was worse than Louis XV;
He was worse than Louis XIV;
He was worse than Louis XIII;
He was the worst since Louis I!Allan Sherman, 1963
Maréchal, nous Voilà! (Marshal, we're here)--Charles Courtioux (1941)
It is stirring, but it was the anthem of butchers and murderers. The French Enlightenment and its revolution were a pure, clamorous evil that has echoed down the corridors of history resulting in death and destruction on an industrial scale.
Regards,
What an anthem!!!!!!!!!!
