{snip}Eerie images inside Fukushima's exclusion zone five years after the nuclear disaster

More than five years after the devastating tsunami and the 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck north-eastern Japan, causing the explosion of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, the Japanese town remains abandoned.

Since April 22, 2011, an area within 20km (12.4miles) radius of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power plant has been cordoned off from the public and listed as the red exclusion zone.

But now, Malaysian photographer Keow Wee Loong has entered into the exclusion zone to capture these eerie images.

...

Among the locations Loong explored during his time there was an empty shopping centre with outlets full of merchandise dating back to 2011 - a reminder of the 150,000 people that were forced to leave the area following the disaster.

He said: 'When I walked into the mall I felt an eerie silence, like time had frozen. The mall was completely empty with no people in it but all the merchandise in place and I could explore anywhere I wanted.

'I always had a childhood dream of going into a mall alone when it is empty, so my dream came true, it was like deja vu, everything is exactly the way it is since 2011, the books marked with 2011, DVD movies of 2011.

'This was one of the creepiest things I have ever seen, I have been to many places, but nothing like Fukushima, the traffic lights are still operating but there are no cars around.

'It all reminded me of the movie I Am Legend, like stepping foot into a post-apocalyptic city.'

Shorts and sandals in a radioactive waste zone?

The guy in the pictures is a first class idiot.

If it happened in the US it would have been stripped by looters long ago. Stuff that glows in the dark is just easier to steal at night.

Thanks for the post.

I hate Daily Mail’s sluggishness.

Here’s another.

I don’t think there’s any radioactivity where he’s going.

Air drop him into what’s left of the reactors.

That would be a quick death. At this point it appears he is destined for a slow and painful death.

There was a story some 30 years ago about a South/Central American medical facility that went bankrupt, and the place was stripped by scavengers, including dismantling some nuclear device. I think it had a piece of radioactive cobalt as the primary source.

The guy that scrounged it carried it around as a good luck piece, and it did a number on him, including destroying a good chunk of his thigh.

Yup. He'll start getting sores in his mouth and have trouble swallowing, hair falling out, etc. Then he'll sue the government because they failed to prevent him from going there unprotected. Oh wait, that happens in America, not Japan. So he'll use a knife to slice his belly open. Idiots can happen in any country, the Japanese don't coddle them.

I am so impressed by the social cohesion of the Japanese. Look at the store shelves - completely full. Cars are left where they were parked. Even valuable possessions like diamond rings remain where their owners left them.

Nothing looted or stolen,

Yep. Hot chicks (nuclear hot mag chicks) and “Clean up in Aisles 1-50”.

Sort of Nature’s version of “shake and bake”.

>Nothing looted or stolen,

It comes from 2,000 years of executing thieves. If you want low crime you need to purge the criminals.

Apparently there are radioactive hogs that are running rampant in their area and the can’t kill them fast enough or burn them fast enough, cause you sure ain’t eating them.

Hogzilla?
