When I was at the Grand Canyon I wouldn’t go near the edge. Its scary.
When I was at the Grand Canyon, at the Navajo Reserve, I had the experience of watching a very fat kid trip. I saw him do a couple of rolls towards the edge. All I could say to my sister was, “Oh my gosh, that kid is round.”
I had visions of him going over, but he was able to stop himself in time.
From the north side (AZ) drive out to Toroweep (google it). It is about 75 miles of dirt road followed by about 7 miles of rock. A 4 wheel drive will get you there. You can drive close to the unguarded edge or walk right up to it. There is usually no one there. The cliff is about 3600 feet. Pretty cool.
I stood as far back from the edge as possible. A classmate of my daughter fell from Mt. Hood years ago.
About three days before Christmas, I was up there in a white out. It was snowing and we were going to stay the next two nights so we weren’t too disappointed that it was a white-out when we arrived.
We walked out to the trail to Mather Point anyway. We could not see the canyon at all but the 30 mph wind driving snow past us seemed to drop into a giant hole — we could sense the presence of that void only feet away.
