[Vanity] Gun Control Issue

Posted on 07/10/2016 5:28:06 AM PDT by 2nd Amendment

I've been thinking about the serious issue of gun control lately. Here is my dilemma. I have a nice AR that has about an 8-1/2 lb trigger pull. I'm having trouble controlling the size of groups. What aftermarket trigger do you recommend? I know a lot of politicians and media have been discussing a lot about gun control but I can't seem to recall anyone addressing my concerns.

I’ve tried a couple different things on my ARs. I got a Timney drop-in that reduced the pull to about 4.5 lbs for my 5.56 carbine - it’s a single-stage trigger which I prefer for a tactical implementation. For the .300 BLK I’m shooting at a little longer ranges and so went with an entire Rock River lower, which has a “national match” two-stage trigger that I like for more *patient* shooting. Both of these might be regarded as a little light for military work but I’m a civilian in his 60’s who only occasionally parachutes behind enemy lines with a dagger between my teeth these days. YMMV.

Interestingly, I have gotten really good (less than 0.3-in) groups with both 40 and 77 grain bullets. Most rifles only like particular combinations and tend toward preferring either heavy or light bullets, but my JP-15 does well across a wide variety.

“The Armalite is an excellent weapon ... “

Until recently I parroted Patrick Sweeney and objected to a firearm being called a “weapon”.
But weapon’s good now.

I really like the Magpul `battery assist device’ on my AR. Maybe tough to get used to for someone used to shooting without it.

This prolly isn’t an issue, like the old AK triggers, unless it is. And you have to be too tired (or stoopid) to remember to remove the round from the chamber, along with the mag, for it to be a problem. And then it prolly still isn’t a problem, or wasn’t on any of mine.
But if it is, you can shoot your eye out!

With groups that size, I’d compare 55 grain and 62 grain. What’s your rifling twist rate? I’ve heard tactical operators say to stick with the GI trigger and learn to use it, rather than convert to a less reliable aftermarket trigger.

Gundog, thank you for your thoughtful reply. I do have an array of bullet weights to try. From 50 grain to 77 grain. I will be happy if my mid-level stainless freedom barrel can make moa. I’ve been around bolt actions all my life, but this is my 1st AR. twist rate is 1:7. I did order the JP &115 basic trigger set from Midway. After watching the video a few times., I’m anxious to install the single stage 3lb trigger.
