The irony of this song is that Christine was in the process of breaking up with husband John McVie at the time. The song was written as a love note to her new lover, who also toured with the band as a techie. Combined with Lindsey Buckingham’s breakup with Stevie Nicks, it was a miracle that this album was ever made.

True. It certainly was. But that is probably what also made the Rumours such a great album. All that angst - the breakups, the new relationships, two couples in the midst of breaking up, sometimes barely on speaking terms with each other, but still writing songs and recording together - all that made for some great song writing and performances.

My favorite Christine McVie song from Rumours is Song Bird:

Most of us would never have heard of Fleetwood Mac if Lindsey Buchannan and Stevie Nicks hadn't joined the group.

People tend to forget that Fleetwood Mac existed and had success before Buckingham and Nicks joined, although that incarnation was by far the most successful in terms of popular success.

Fleetwood Mac was a very successful blues rock/prog band in their early years and many do not realize that the song “Black Magic Woman”, the song best known from the Santana version, was originally a Fleetwood Mac composition.

Fleetwood Mac Peter Green - Black Magic Woman (Live Boston Tea Party) 1970

Then there was “Oh Well”, a song that was from Fleetwood Mac’s early years but often performed in concert by the band during the Lindsey Buckingham years. FLEETWOOD MAC Oh Well 1969

Christine Perfect as she was known before her marriage to John McVie was a fairly well known blues artist along with her band Chicken Shack, not so much in the US but had great success in the UK.

CHRISTINE PERFECT - i'd rather go blind

Two of my favorite post Peter Green and pre-Buckingham-Nicks Fleetwood Mac albums are “Bare Trees” and IMO the often underrated “Mystery To Me”– the Bob Welch years. Bob Welch would later have a solo career and would re-record the track “Sentimental Lady” from Bare Trees on his solo album.

My favorite song from those years was Christine McVie’s “Why”:
