Day one of the 2016 tour finished right at Omaha Beach in Normandy France. With the 70th anniversary of "D" Day coming this week the message of remembrance is a stark contrast to the condition of our world today.

They use the old fashioned was of spotting a road mark like a sign post or intersection stripe, then checking the time it takes for the chasers to hit that mark.

I saw the part you're talking about and I think the breakaway pair had been timed from a point right where they made a turn and started up hill, so they had slowed considerably as the speeding pack came into the check point.

TOUR TRIVIA:

Peter Sagan took the green sprinter's jersey in his first Tour d France four years ago and has held it ever since.

Sagan and (now) wife Kate visiting Emerald Bay in my home town -

I would have been thrilled to be out for a spin and spot him on the road.

Thanks for doing this again Bay! Much appreciated!

It’s been an exciting few days of racing. I’m glad to see Cav is in good form and that Sagan is making a good go of it.

Wow! Another photo-finish to ID the winner. Marcel Kittel squeezed a breath beyond Bryan Coquard after the longest stage of the race. I feel bad for Coquard. He was within a hair of putting his name in the record books and getting kissed on the podium, only to be forgotten by sunrise. But, Peter Sagan (right there as always), knows how to stay close and assess what it takes to keep the Yellow Jersey.

And now the road tilts up. It's not the toughest stage as mountains go, but it's longer than usual with several rated climbs.

Will we see an early statement from the likes of ValVerde or Quintana, or might they cool their jets a while and mark the ambitious wannabes who stretch it out early? As they say, "It's time to start separating the ascenders from the pretenders."

Thanks again for an enjoyable thread.

These photo finishes add another level of excitement as you look to see whose wheel actually crosses first.

The overhead shots are great for assessment of body position, but the ground level shots are great.

For the life of me I can't imagine why comments on a thread about a bike race are being censored. But hey - dontcha love it when I guy you've never heard of goes solo and takes a stage?

For the life of me I can't imagine why comments on a thread about a bike race are being censored.

My assumption is that someone made some nasty comments about a sport they have no knowledge of. Many years ago I competed at a national level against guys like Greg Lemond. They were mostly the finest sportsmen that I have met in my entire life. It is too bad that the recent scandals have stained the sport in the eyes of so many.

When I stayed at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs the girls in the dorms next to us were quite muscular. At that time he East Germans swimmers especially and other Eastern Block athletes were known to be using steroids. There were many jokes at the time made about the masculine looking women athletes from the Eastern Block countries, but somehow people didn't condemn swimming, track, weight lifting and all the other Olympic sports.

There are many people here who are not fond of those of us who find cycling to be a worthwhile pastime. The amazing thing is that I know people well into their 70s who can still ride a hundred miles in around 5 hours when in a group. Most 20 year olds in our society can't ride 40 miles in a day. In fact only about a third of people in the age group eligible to join the military can currently qualify. Most are ineligible because they are too fat and out of shape.

When you find people participating in a sport who are arguably in better shape than others who are fifty years their junior I think that is a pretty good endorsement of the health benefits associated. And yes John Kerry is the biggest idiot of all time but he has nothing to do with others who like to cycle. Just because Obama likes to golf doesn't mean all golfers are idiots.

Hey, I’m enjoying the heck out of these early stages.

Loved every finish - and the rest of the race each day.

Was a little ticked when I missed stage 5 and went to watch it at night and found the sports channel was running NASCAR each night and the TdF wasn’t until 11:00PM.

The Brit did a great job yesterday; have been watching the Tour, Phil and Paul do a fine job often with too little material. Surprised that so few Americans are in the race this year. was struck by the gorges area they rode through the other day - didn’t know it existed.

A guess only but it maybe photos from sources that can’t be posted on FR. Just a suggestion,
Hit the abuse button and asked the mods what is the problem so it can be stopped.
