Sorry; my above reply should have been to your comment 54: "So did he allow his own progeny to stay slaves as well? What an unpleasant man."

I hope you noticed how I slipped that Trump reference in there.... LOL!

Yours is a better comparison and basically what I meant. Nobody on the thread had said it in the terms I put it so mpy underlying point stands, I hope. Slaves were an investment to maintain, not fodder to abuse.

That is true. I try to keep that in mind. Starting with myself!

Jefferson was a thinker/dreamer. Management appears not to have been his strong point. He had the vision for our country and thankfully others were able to carry it forward. However his role was necessary and invaluable. I am thankful!

"I simply mean that not all slaves were so abused as portrayed by modern movies and the NSM. Many older movies show a bonding between some owners and slaves, and that generation had grandfathers who were slave owners. They would know."

I am one who knows from my ancestors. My great grandmother's family 'owned' a slave, who after the war lived in the house with the family as a beloved friend. I grew up on stories about Rosa, from my grandmother.

There were some terrible slave owners; and there were those like Jefferson, who tried to deal responsibly with the exigencies of his time.

I don't believe for a moment that he fathered any slave's child; though there were some in his family and genetic line who might have done.

“A Look at Thomas Jefferson's Egregious Hypocrisy” Egregious hypocrisy? Mr. Horgan is oblivious to how he is repudiated by his own words. This article is a baby-step toward taking down the monuments to Jefferson, Washington, and yes, Lincoln.

It's been common throughout history for the conquering power to efface/discredit/erase the monuments, images, writings, language, and culture of the now vanquished populace.
The defeated shall be made to know by the victors that the captors intend to rule with impunity.
