According to http://www.dictionary.com/browse/neotenous , “Few English speakers likely know this word.”

Unless they are a biology teacher AND a herp fan. Guilty on both counts.

Lizards and 'phibs ROCK! (cats, too, of course)

If anything, I must commend you for your use of the word “neotonous”, meaning “retention of juvenile characteristics in adult life”.

Now, if I can somehow incorporate it into a haiku, my day will be complete.

I have faith in you, T-Bone. :) You're good! :)

I knew a girl once who was a herp fan.

There are more of us than you know. I used to come out West every year to go herping with local herpers. We would hike during the day and go night cruising over the roads come evening. Saw a lot of very cool things, like rattlesnakes, gila monsters, and scads of more ordinary lizards.

I love the tiny Western lizards like utas, whiptails, Tucson banded geckos, granite night lizards, zebra tail lizards, earless lizards, Yarrow's spiny lizards (gorgeous!), tree lizards, etc. Just lost a marble whiptail girl to old age and hope I can locate another one to replace her. Living in NYC, it's HARD to find Western lizards, unless I luck out at a reptile show around here.

My overarching goal for my back yard is to make it verdant, overgrown, and Amazon-y. I water a lot.

As a result I get a lot of geckos, the kind with the little waggle thing on their neck that they blow up during mating season.

Just about every other day I have to go outside and take one away from my cat. I feel for them.
