By having people thrown in prison for their "sins." Cersei elevated him to High Septon, and then he turned on her when the time was right.

Except that these weren't just sins, these were actual crimes against Westerosi law. No one on the show denied that.

Arguing about whether or not he was right or wrong, is a mote point.
