Microsoft forced to back off tricky Win10 upgrade prompts

Microsoft has been forced to change the red "x" notification on its Windows 10 upgrade prompts after users reacted angrily to the misleading button.

Microsoft dispensed with the historical function of the red "x" in the upgrade prompts to instead use it as authorisation for the upgrade process; clicking the button meant users gave their consent for the upgrade to take place.

But backlash from users over the perceived trickery has pushed Microsoft to pledge to modify the button back to its original function.

Now, clicking the "x" will dismiss the upgrade prompt and won't initiate the Windows 10 download, Microsoft Windows and devices chief Terry Myerson said in a statement.

"Since we introduced a new upgrade experience for Windows 10, we've received feedback that some of our valued customers found it confusing," Myerson said.

Someone on FR suggested a program called GWX. Installed it on our computers. Scanned files and removed some that were already present. No problems since installation and clean-up! Can’t remember who recommended it but THANKS!!!

If v. 10 is so great, why do they have to trick you into upgrading??

Pull the power cord

I no longer do that with running computers. Last time I tried it, a hard drive died.

power up and search for something called Never10

Yes, Never 10 was created by the great Steve Gibson of Spinrite fame:

https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

"Hiding" Windows 10-related Windows updates such as KB 3035583 worked for a while to block the upgrade, then in a substantial breach of ethics Microsoft started overriding the "hiding." So if you don't want 10, forget hiding updates, go with Never 10.

That said, while I am starting to hate Microsoft, I actually like Windows 10, except for its privacy violations. It has been perfectly stable, and has some nice new features.

To thwart at least some of Win 10's spyware activities, I like "Shut Up 10," from https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10. I say "some' because Microsoft's new OS is designed to phone home, and it can probably find ways to do so.

Hey Grams A. GWX is the terminology used to mean Get Windows 10. The program you used is the same one I posted earlier in the thread. It is a nifty little program isn’t it?

You said it!

Confusing? Hell’s bells!

It’s fraud.

MS behaves like Union jackboot bullies.

Is there no alternative to MS and ATT?

Well, OK. Good luck with getting your money back, and hope you succeed if you do go that route.

As far as “free”, Linux has always been free except for the costs of data useage and bandwidth to download, and of course the cost of any discs to burn the image onto -unless you purchase a pre-burned disc instead.

Worth so much more than any ‘doze OS I ever used. *smile*

I despise Microsoft for these tactics. I know a woman in IT who left her computer on over a multi-day vacation. She came back to find her computer had mostly auto upgraded to Windows 10, but it failed. She couldn't back it out and she had to recover from a backup drive.

How do you force a very major upgrade onto people's computers without knowing they've got a good, current backup? Why make so many people so frustrated and mad?

Why do you send all keystrokes (including websites) and all file indexes to Microsoft's cloud for “advertising?” How can this all be justified by saying, “You got this free, so shut up and keep taking this rape?”

Microsoft, with our next Windows computer, will no longer be our primary operating system. Linux, OpenBSD, and Apple will be our new primary OSes. Microsoft will be cut down to games and special programs, only. Windows 10 will have the vast majority of the remote websites it communicates with blocked at our router (I realize one or more of the 30+ sites it silently copies information to are required for updates). I will only allow future laptops to leave our home with a validated replacement software firewall that can't be routed around by ignoring of the hosts file exclusions, as the current Windows Firewall in Windows 10 appears to allow without showing what it is doing against any common sense understanding one might have.

Linux Mint with Cinnamon is the first free near full replacement of Windows available. I encourage all neophytes to consider that for your Internet, video/DVD, and Office-type needs.

Always have multiple backups of any data (or installed programs) you deem to be essential.

You can never have too many backups. :)

too little, too late: after over a year of tricking people into installing unwanted W10, suddenly 30 days before the “free offer” runs out and after losing a lawsuit that if turned into a class action that could cost microsoft $10,000/PC, microsoft reverses course and restores the meaning of “no means no”.

I suspect some a-hole has his annual bonus tied to upgrade numbers.

Disclaimer: Although I work for Microsoft, I have no knowledge or insight into Windows 10 upgrade policies.

You do realize that Microsoft has to stick to the years of support they said they would maintain from when Windows 7 and the others first came out, right? Businesses and consumers bought with those years in mind.

Pushing people to 10 does not help them in any way. Keeping 10 and continuing to upgrade that will be what keeps the support on Windows down, over the years, though.

Still running Linux Mint 13 (or 14, not sure) KDE -64 LTE on one machine, Athlon -64 dual core older machine. Never had a crash, never had any compatibility problems with peripherals, and NEVER demanded or forced any “upgrade” to Win10 that I can recall.

Great OS. :)

No, Grams A was referring to GWX Control Panel:

Gibson’s program is similar, but completely different.

Pull the power cord...

Sorry to say, but that was a weak drive then. Sometimes you have no choice, like when the upgrade is progressing or initiated and the OS will not allow you to shutdown properly and no amount of clicking on your part will stop the process. Like on a laptop for instance when it is frozen sometimes the only option is to unplug the power pak and then remove the battery.
