It sounds like his teammates were in on it and he wasn’t a jerk about it.
The first openly gay MLB player will be celebrated by any club that gets him, they will promote him because of it.
But baseball might be the sport where the nature of the game will long delay it more than the other major pro-sports. A gay that comes out is going to have to play up to what everyone knows is acceptable. Pitch track will make sure they are legit.

There will, undoubtedly, be an "Outed Day", for all of the non-Burkes, particularly those who put up better statistics, who had grievances of variances unperceived as of late.
What you speak of, of course, is Rainbow Uniform Day.
